Car crashes into traffic lights at Victoria Gateway

Firefighters had to free a man from his car after he crashed into a traffic light on Victoria Gateway this morning.

The male, believed to be in his 30s, smashed into the lights whilst driving his Nissan Note car at about 1.20am.

Crew members from Southend fire station had to cut off the roof of the car to free the driver, who was described as hurt but conscious.

Paramedics placed the man on a spinal board as they feared he had back injuries before taking him to Southend Hospital.

Can't wait to hear his excuse! Did he trip and fall into the traffic light?

Kamikaze drivers to rid us of the many unwanted sets of traffic lights. GREAT IDEA!

I'm not a driver but my partner is and to be fair it's not the best junction half of it doesn't even have the lanes painted, and the traffic light order keeps changing, I could easily see how someone not from the area could come unstuck, that's if there not already getting run over on the giant patio sorry bus lane or risking all down "city beach".

Your comments are what the majority of the boroughs residents have been saying since this ****-up of a project was completed (just ask any taxi driver!)

Everyday i see numerous near misses due to the flawed layout and the councils refusal to put functionality over design aesthetics (ie: no white lines dictacting lanes, etc)

Totally agree but It's just another case of when Southend council want something they go ahead and do whether it be a good or bad idea and regardless of local opinion and need, though it usually has more of a chance if one of the Councillors friends has ties to a building firm that needs work! lol

I wonder if speed, drink or drugs have anything to do with it. 1:20am can't blame traffic or lights can't see it being busy at that time.

Are you seriously trying to blame a clear incident of bad driving on the road layout?

Get real. Millions of drivers use roads and junctions they've never used before EVERY DAY. By your way of thinking there should be carnage out there with people blindly rolling along and crashing into things 'because I haven't been here before'.

I never said this particular incident was because of the road layout to be honest I don't know the full details of how/what happened, I just said I can see how people could maybe get confused there are often people going towards London road from queensway in the middle lane wanting to go straight on even though its right only, there's just no educating some people its just not the best of set ups that's all.

These lights are awful, how many drivers do you see going straight on when in the middle lane at these traffic lights?? The middle lane is right turn onto vic avenue only, but some drivers just don't care. The accident might of occured due to this guy being in this lane and doing exactly this with a car in the left had lane going straight on and filtering over into the right hand lane once over the junction as it is allowed to do. Crazy junction with too many traffic lights.

I've lost count the number of times I have seen a car coming from Victoria Avenue and turning right towards London Road, only to stop ON THE JUNCTION when they see the red light for cars coming from Queensway and thinking it applies to them.

Also, has anyone else noticed that the BUS/TAXI ONLY lane ('shared space') is the only way for cars to exit the train station car park? So, cars coming from Victoria Avenue towards Queensway can easily avoid the lights by driving through the car park.

Totally ridiculous.

Giant Patio - yes I like that. Road layouts should be understood by newcomers to an area. This isnt so it does not work. End of.

It was a Nissan Note - I hardly think speed would be a factor...!

As I have already asked, how much did drink, drugs or speed have to do with the crash. you can not tell me at 1:20am the traffic, pedestrians or not knowing the area had some thing to do with it.

Pretty poor to blame road lay out in a town center zone, 30mph max.
My guess the pillock was being a complete **** and lost control in the wet.
Lets hope he is taken to court once he recovers. At least there should be cctv in that area.

If you can't understand the road lay out you should not be on the road, simple as that.

It's not rocket science, friends recently visited from the US, New Zealand and Russia ALL got past Victoria Gateway without any problems all in the right lanes, but then again they can drive unlike the moaning numptys on here.

As I said if you can't understand the lay out find another route or better still get off the road.

Be intresting to see any photos of the damage to car or traffic lights.

Someone commented that this wouldn't have happened had the roundabout still been there. I don't like the layout of the junction & avoid it like the plague, but think that had the roundabout been there, this vehicle may well have ended up in the middle of it.
Not a gambler, but if I were, drink &/or drugs would be my wager.

I actually drove past the car as it was embedded in the traffic light the driver had alrady been removed.

I am from Chelmsford and had a trip to the
Casino and am not use to the area by any means and on the way back i came accross this piece of road and it was so confusing i ended up going the wrong way down a 1 way road which is extrmely unlike me, luckily no one was around got away with it

my daughter passed this incident when the ambulance had arrived. she said you couldn't tell what make of car it was it was so damaged. didn't appear to be any other vehicle involved although they could have left by then. seems maybe speeding or showing off could have been a factor at that time of the morning, or maybe alcohol was involved?

I walked past the car at about 2.30am. The impact the car suffered didn't look that bad, the car had the pole in the front right wing. The traffic light pole was bent forwards so it must have hit it at a considerable speed. The car looked a lot worse though as the boot and roof had been cut off.

Yawn Yawn!! Here we go again with everyone blaming the road layout!! I suggest those who dont understand how to use the roads should not be on them!?!

This story is about a single vehicle hitting a static object - nothing to do with the layout of the road. if you want to know how to use the road may i suggest taking some driving lessons!

As for the comment - 'ask any taxi driver' - since when do they cast the final vote on road plans - they are not the best drivers in the world!!

I wonder if it was the same idiot driving a blue nissan note who overtook and cut me up on the bend of priory crescent the other day. he attempted to overtake twice on manners way and then skidded on the roundabout trying to get up priory crescent from the right hand lane! not the sort of car many men in thier 30's drive and he was destined to crash. he was agressive in his driving style and verbally to anyone in his way! karma?
