A ROBBER made off with cash from a Southchurch newsagent after threatening a member of staff with a weapon.

The Big News 3 store in Eastern Esplanade was targeted around 6.30am yesterday.

A man went into the shop, picked up a packet of crisps from the display and started to look around the shop.

He then approached the counter, threatened a member of staff with what police say was “something that looked like a blade” and told him to hand over money.

The shop worker gave him a sum of cash and the man left the store, heading along the seafront towards the direction of the Ocean Beach bar and restaurant.

Dc Vicky Caine, who is investigating the incident, said: "The man is described as white, aged in his 20s, about 6ft tall and was wearing a black jacket, a grey hooded top, black trousers and dark trainers.”

The shop worker was not injured but was left shaken up after the robbery.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Dc Vicky Caine at Southend CID on Essex Police 101 or people can contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Very sad, I like the big news, there is one mug who works in that shop but the rest of them are great guys, its a shame & in their defence they may well have CCTV, its just takes a while for it to go though the process prior to being released to the media.

I'd be interested in learning what the alleged perpetrator's accent was, as its an unusual location for a non local to target or just happen to be strolling past at 630am.

Wonder how much the robber got? Good luck to him whoever he is. Hard times out there at the moment you got to do crazy things to survive these days.

I think we all agree that not everyone wearing a Hoodie is a robber or someone thats up to no good that chooses to hide behind that horrible choice of clothing thats been adopted by the dregs, for me its associated with lowlife(with exceptions),unwashed Grey flannel bottoms and tops is the ultimate low end.

I've always found the hoodie very handy, to grab, just approach from behind, stops many a juvenile in their tracks, and they are speechless, as they cack their pants

He has to be pretty thick to rob a newsagent at 6.30 in the morning. How much money would they have taken by that time ?
