THE Transport Secretary will officially open Southend Airport’s new terminal extension next week.

Patrick McLoughlin, Secretary of State for Transport, will open the £10million extension on Monday.

The opening is the finale of a six-year, £120 million revamp of the airport by owners the Stobart Group.

Airport operations director David Lister and Stobart Group chief executive officer Andrew Tinkler will lead Mr McLoughlin on a tour of the airport.

The MP will then meet representatives from all the major airlines operating from the airport, local MPs, councillors and officers from Southend Council and Rochford District Council, local business leaders and residents’ associations during a reception in the terminal extension, where a commemorative plaque will be unveiled.

Within the next 7 days we will all know the new routes from Southend, after many weeks of guesswork and speculation. On one hand it's good to have the government behind regional airport developments, but to make the local
people show a bit more interest, a celebrity would have been a better idea.

I have just remembered - this McLoughlin chap is that man who is so manically pro the filthy environment destroying HS2 garbage proposal (which hopefully will never happen). Good Lord - not really a good chap to have for this occasion (and I totally support the new improved Southend Airport).

It's a good list so far...we just need some Scandinavian links (Stockholm and Copenhagen)..and a Paris link would be nice, and perhaps Rotterdam, another strategic German City, and then the ski routes for the winter....full house ! :-) Keep going Southend....
