FAMILY and friends hope to raise nearly half-a-million pounds to pay for treatment in America which could save the life of a five-year-old girl.

Niamh Curry was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, an aggressive cancer which only affects children, when she was three years old.

She has since has spent numerous days and nights in hospital for treatment, including a four-hour operation to remove a tumour, high-dose chemotherapy, radiotherapy and a stem cell transplant.

Now she needs pioneering treatment being trialled in America, but it costs £450,000.

Her supporters have managed to raise £211,000 so far, but now her extended family hope to add to the pot and spread the word about Niamh’s plight.

Lorraine Parson, 50, of Church Road, Benfleet, a cousin of Niamh’s father, Chris, is holding a fundraising curry night at the Tandoori Parlour, in Hart Road, Thundersley, on April 25. She said: “I’m hoping as many people will come along as possible.

“She’s a lovely little girl. I’ve had an awful lot of donations from people already who aren’t coming on the evening, but still wanted to contribute.”

The fundraising campaign has the support of top Canadian wheelchair racer Josh Cassidy, who lost his legs as a child to neuroblastoma, but survived.

He will promote Niamh’s charity on his kit, while competing in Sunday’s London Marathon.

Celebrities, including Jonathan Ross, comedian Jason Manford, pop star Jessie J and Westlife singer Shane Filan, have also backed the cause through Twitter and other social networking sites.

Niamh’s father, Chris, 39, said: “Niamh still remains the happiest, kindest, most caring little girl you will ever meet.

“She is always smiling and loves a hug with her big sister Hannah, or her mummy and daddy. I would like to say thank you to everyone who has donated or held an event so far.”

The curry evening will start at 7.30pm. Tickets are £10 including a starter, Indian buffet or English menu, and a disco. To find out more call 01268 751396.
