A ROW has broken out over delays in releasing £80,000 set aside for community projects in the Ghyllgrove area of Basildon.

Labour councillors Pat and Phil Rackley say nothing has happened since they asked residents how they wanted the money spent seven months ago.

Family Mosaic Housing gave the money to Basildon Council in return for planning permission to build on the old Milford Hall Community Centre site.

Suggestions included a new garden at Barnet Bears Nursery, new playground equipment for local play areas, and a youth club.

Mr Rackley said: “I have written to cabinet members, seeking clarification and I can’t understand why this is taking so long.”

Phil Turner, Tory councillor responsible for resources recently took over responsibility for allocation of such funds from the council’s paid officials, who used to do it.

He criticised the Rackleys’ comments as “political”, but added the money was safely invested until it was needed.

Mr Turner added: “Mr and Mrs Rackley did not carry out anywhere near enough public consultation over how to spend this money.

“One of the ideas were for some to be spent on a nursery, which is a commercial enterprise. While we are sometimes prepared to give grants to worthwhile companies, there needs to be more thought than if we were donating to non-commercial projects.

“I can’t say for certain when the money will be spent, but I guarantee it will go on worthwhile community projects in the Ghyllgrove area.”
