THE Conservatives narrowly held onto two Rochford district by-elections in the face of a strong Ukip challenge.
Robin Dray, already a Tory Rayleigh town councillor for Whitehouse, won the district seat by beating Ukip’s Linda Kendall by just seven votes.
And Tory Lesley Butcher beat Anthony Gibbs, who won the county council seat of Rayleigh South for Ukip, to win Hawkwell North by 372 votes to 311.
The by-elections for Rochford District Council were called after Conservatives Bob Pointer and Peter Webster stood down.
