POLICE have launched a probe after a secret spy camera was found concealed in the changing room of a popular gym.

The camera was set up directly facing a toilet and would have filmed gym users changing.

One member of Fitness First in Festival Way, Basildon, said they were outraged that, after overhearing staff talking about the sinister discovery, members of the gym have yet to be officially told.

The fitness centre has now reported the incident to police who are investigating.

The camera, which is cleverly disguised as a wall hook for towels and clothes, was found in the disabled toilet by staff.

One member of the gym, who did not want to be identified, said: “The camera was disguised as a towel hook by the door as you walked in, facing the toilet itself.

“As a member, when I overheard the receptionist I was shocked and appalled.

“Since this incident no members have been notified and I believe because we are paying our membership we have a right to know.”

A spokeswoman for Fitness First said the gym chain had reported the incident to police who had “begun investigations immediately”.

She said the gym could not reveal details of the incident to members while the police investigation is ongoing.

The spokeswoman added: “Fitness First take the courtesy, privacy and security of members extremely seriously and are currently working with the police, assisting further in the investigation that is currently underway.”

In a quick search on the internet, the Echo quickly found a surveillance camera available to buy for around £30 which is disguised as a wall hook.

The black plastic hook looks innocent, but beneath its shell it houses a motion-sensitive camera. As soon as it detects any movement the camera kicks into gear and begins filming.
