AN ELDERLY man had his bank card stolen and his account raided after a burglar posed as a rat catcher to con his way inside his home.

Fears have been raised that the scam is being used across Castle Point after an elderly man was targeted in Benfleet.

Castle Point Council received reports that a man was knocking on doors in Fleet Street, saying he was concerned because rats and vermin were running loose around the street.

The imposter told the resident he was from the council’s environment health department, and showed him a piece of paper with Castle Point Council’s address on it.

The scam artist wanted to check the resident’s loft and on doing so said there were rats up there.

He left the man to replace the loft ladder and went downstairs, saying the council would be in touch.

Later the elderly resident found his bank card was missing and later discovered money had been withdrawn from his account.

The resident said the imposter was smartly dressed and acted in a professional manner.

Castle Point Council has insisted they would never visit a house without appointment, and all officers carry identification cards.

It is unclear how much was stolen from the man’s bank account, but Castle Point Council fear more residents in the area could be targeted.

A council spokesman said:“Our officers would never just turn up at a resident’s house without making a prior appointment.

“All council officers carry an identity badge, with their photograph and job title on the front and a contact number for the council on the reverse.

“We would advise residents who might find themselves in this situation to call that number to verify the identity of anyone who claims to be from the council.”

The council urge anyone in doubt to call 01268 882200 and ask to speak to a staff member in the environmental health department to confirm the visit.

Essex Police have been contacted for comment.
