PUPILS from James Hornsby School will fire off rockets in France as part of an international competition.

Youngsters from the James Hornsby School, in High Road, Laindon, head to Paris on June 18 for the final of the 2015 International Rocketry Fly-Offs.

The school won the national competition for a place in the final, gaining a £500 prize.

The competition, run by UK Aerospace Youth Rocketry Challenge, requires pupils to design, build and launch a model rocket with a fragile payload.

The rocket must reach a set altitude, with specific total flight duration, to win.

Science teacher Matt Piggott said: “The students are feeling confident and believe they can beat the teams from USA and France to bring back the first place trophy for Team James Hornsby and Team GB.”

Headteacher Jason Carey said: “We are delighted with the students’ fantastic achievement at being national champions and are very proud indeed.

“How fantastic for the school to have so many rocket scientists.”
