Southend named as a local alcohol action area

Southend Standard: Help for Southend to combat drinking troubles Help for Southend to combat drinking troubles

SOUTHEND has been named one of 20 new local alcohol action areas to combat drink-fuelled crime and disorder and the damage caused to people’s health.

The Government has launched the scheme across England and Wales to tackle the harmful effects of excessive drinking.

It is reported alcohol-related crime and disorder costs an estimated £11billion per year and the Government wants to support local communities in reducing the scenes of drunkenness and violence that blight communities.

Each action area will receive support and expertise from the Home Office, the Department of Health, and Public Health England. They will work with mentor areas that have successfully tackled the same issues faced by alcohol action areas. The project will run until March 2015.

Local agencies, including licensing authorities, health bodies and the police will work in partnership with businesses and other organisations to address the problems.

Haroon Siddique, a GP at Southend Medical Centre, said: “I think in general practice, we tend to see more of the longer-term consequences of alcohol abuse while accident and emergency will see the more acute, short-term effects.

“With A&E already under so much stress, anything that will help reduce this will be good.”

This is what you get when you extend pub opening hours. Thank Labour for the increase in violence and drink related offences. They are the ones who introduced lax pub opening hours in 2003.

There was an outcry then about what kind of a situation this would create. All the usual libertarian lefties banged on about how it would improve things because they cannot bear to hear the counter argument especially if it's something they've dreamed up.

Common sense: increase opening hours, increased drinking, increased violence. Simple isn't it? But not to the loony left libertarians.

But as usual the lefties were wrong and everybody else was right.

Funny thing is that then Labour killed off pubs by introducing the smoking ban. Talk about shoot yourself in the foot.

But then practically everything Labour do is wrong anyway, filled as it is with health and safety nazis and other such bores.

Where you really need the health and safety measures, these thick Labour lefties totally ignore.

But they always know best don't they? Not.

Their one and only big achievement was the NHS but they wrecked that with mass uncontrolled immigration.

Everything else they do and everything else they say is open to serious question or just plain misguided.

And I don't give a monkey's what Cllr Callaghan thinks. It's still a free country and I still have freedom of speech despite the best efforts of his party to take it away from me.

Report what I say to whoever you like. I don't give a ****.

How about a zero tolerance policy from Plod and the judiciary instead?

Much easier and cheaper - make the fines so stingingly high, it would even fund itself.

so you think as a responsible adult being told to go home at 11 o'clock by a bunch of civil servants is not exactly the kind of nanny state interference you normally despise ? the previous opening hours were a joke, with people rushing home from work on friday to get out only for bells ringing and "time please" a couple of hours later..... what is required is proper policing and serious penalties for those that fail to take responsibility for their actions.... in any case, many towns, southend included used to be nightmare at 'chucking out times' with everyone on the streets at the same time..... extended opening hours are actually one of the very few decent things the otherwise hopeless labour govt ever did, and i agree 100% with you on immigration, a catasthrophe, albeit not what this story is about.
