New Southend Airport terminal opens

Southend Standard: David Lister at the terminal before it opened earlier this year. David Lister at the terminal before it opened earlier this year.

SOUTHEND Airport’s new £10million terminal building opened this afternoon.

The extension offers more space for passengers, more shops and is set to bring 300 new jobs.

It is was up and running just before 5pm. It is the latest stage of development at the airport, in which £120million has been invested since the Stobart Group took over in 2008.

The departure lounge is four times the size of the previous facility, with the extension also tripling retail floor space.

It has seating for 300 and changes have also been made to maintain passenger flow.

The number of check-in desks is increased from six to ten, under the move, with space for four more, and the gates have doubled, from three to six.

Operations director David Lister said: “Travellers will be able to make use of a more relaxed, open and spacious departure lounge and also shop, or have a drink and something to eat in our new bar.”

Great news, looking forward to seeing the improvements since we used it last year.
Flying to Edinburgh in April & Alicante in July from our own Airport, long may it continue.
Well done to everyone concerned, very happy Southender.

Great news. I know people from all over the South East that have used Southend Airport, all of whom can't speak highly of the experience.

Let's hope that this leads to an increase in the variety of destinations and other airlines.

Well -that was all done very quietly!! Is everything actually finished? When I flew in on Monday evening this week there still seemed to be a lot of work in progress on the right hand side between the arrivals exit and the terminal exit doors. Some pictures would be nice please, Echo.

So destinations are now:
Alicante,
Amsterdam,
Barcelona,
Berlin,
Dublin,
Edinburgh,
Faro,
Geneva,
Ibiza,
Jersey,
Krakow,
Malaga,
Newquay,
Palma,
Tenerife and
Venice.

Hope someone rethinks the Belfast service as that was very useful; I wander if there are any announcements on new routes due?

Fantastic news, as a regular flyer this will make for an incredibly easier transfer than before; and on the plus note more flights will wind up my next door neighbour even more……perhaps he should just go to France or maybe somewhere else as you can't get to France at the moment from Southend airport :-)

Sad people with sad lives, I'm afraid.
Always makes me laugh whenever there is a protest against anything in Southend I always see the same faces when I pass!
Sorry moaners but I'm loving using our Airport, long may it continue & if that's being selfish then sorry but I don't care.
I think it's the best thing to happen to Southend in a long time!

Couldn't agree more! Great news! I hope they continue to expand and list more destinations

Would be interesting to see how many of these moaners actually use the airport to fly!
