Southend Standard: New album and O2 gig date from Wilko with Who legend Daltrey New album and O2 gig date from Wilko with Who legend Daltrey

LEGENDARY former Dr Feelgood guitarist Wilko Johnson is to release a joint album with Roger Daltrey, lead singer of rock giants The Who.

The duo have also announced the date of a one-off show at London’s O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire, on Tuesday, February 25, to coincide with the release.

The joint album, called Going Back Home, features ten re-makes of vintage Wilko songs, such as Sneaking Suspicion and All Through The City, as well as a version of the Bob Dylan classic, Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window.

Rhythm and blues legend Wilko, who is from Canvey and lives in Westcliff, is battling terminal pancreatic cancer, which he was diagnosed with in December 2012.

He met Roger Daltrey when seated next him at an awards ceremony in 2010.

Early last year, he said he wouldn’t play again because of the illness, but his passion for music has seen him perform as a surprise guest at last year’s Village Green Festival, in Chalkwell Park, Westcliff, and the Railway Hotel, in Clifftown Road, Southend.

He also performed at Koko, in Camden, North West London.

Wilko said: “I’ve had a brilliant year. I was meant to die in October and now I’ve recorded this with Roger.”

The album was recorded in a week last November, with Wilko’s regular touring band of bassist Norman Watt-Roy and drummer Dylan Howe, and will be released on the Chess imprint.

Roger Daltrey said: “I’m very proud of this album. So much music today is over-polished.

“This record has a freshness that can only come from the pressures we’re under.”
