Billericay's karting protg Trevor Randall has won the top Club 100 Karting Championship in only his second season in the competition.

He equalled the record number of wins, finishing first in four of the 10 races.

Randall, 23, who is currently studying engineering at Northampton University, secured the championship when winning the penultimate race at Buckmoor Park, leaving his closest rival trailing in fifth place and with no chance of catching him on points in the final race.

As a novice last year Trevor secured second place with a late run and was always considered favourite to secure the 1998 championship. The victory earns him a first place prize of £500.

Trevor is determined to follow the path of many current Formula One drivers, who started their careers in karting, and is seeking to progress by securing sponsorship to participate in Formula Ford or Formula Audi car racing in 1999.

"I started karting at the age of 15 and my aim to eventually make the big step up to F1," he said this week. "I know it is going to be hard work but I would like to follow in the steps of Nigel Mansell, Michael Schumacher and Ayrton Senna, who all started first in karting."

Supported all the way by his parents, David and Pauline Randall, says he would not have achieved his success without their help.

The Randall family are now seeking sponsorship as he moves up into car racing.

"This is a great opportunity for a locally-based company to get in on the ground floor of what promises to be a successful career within a glamorous and high profile sport," said David.

Trevor added: "I think there are many ways such sponsorship can be of benefit to a company as motor racing has such a high profile.''
