FOLLOWING the success of their debut concert, Southend’s newest choir will be performing again on Saturday Southend Vox was set up by Emma Turnbull in January, and this weekend sees the choir’s second concert at Crowstone United Reformed Church, following their debut in June.

The concert, Keep Calm and Carry On, is in aid of the British Legion, and features an abundance of wartime music, including Bless ’Em All, White Cliffs of Dover, Get Happy and Putting on the Ritz.

This time around the concert welcomes guest performers Peter Thorley and Sean Quigley.

Peter, a local ukulele player, will be accompanying the male choir members in their performance of the George Formby standard Leaning on a Lamp Post. Sean is a local actor, who has recently completed his studies at Rada and will be entertaining the audience with some classic Rat Pack songs.

Musical director Emma, 30, welcomes all ages and levels of ability to the choir, and is keen to increase the number of male singers.

She says: “I would love to be able to increase the number of men to give a bit more vocal weight, so the sound balances.

“Southend Vox offers a fresh, dynamic and lively approach to choral singing.

“Our focus is on producing entertaining, top-quality choral performances in an enjoyable, relaxed and friendly atmosphere.”

Rehearsals are held every Wednesday at Temple Sutton Primary School, in Eastern Avenue, Southend, from 8pm to 9.30pm.

“There are no scary auditions,” adds Emma.

“Anyone who is 18 or older is welcome to join our friendly group. All we ask for is commitment.”

Saturday’s concert at the church in Crowstone Road, Westcliff, starts at 7.30pm.
