WHAT was once an Essex farming family’s informal gathering of half a dozen steam engines is now one of the largest events of its type.

Essex Country Show is once again being held at Barleylands Farm this weekend.

The show, with an emphasis on agricultural history and rural crafts, is now in its 23rd year. Last year it attracted more than 35,000 visitors.

Held every September, the show boasts steam engines, working horses, arena events and many other exhibits. It is also a great opportunity to see a sheep-shearing demonstration and heavy horses ploughing the land using traditional methods harking back to a bygone era.

The show will take place at the farm and craft village in Barleylands Road, Billericay, on Saturday and Sunday.

Throughout the busy two days, there will also be crafts people demonstrating their talents, vintage cars and tractors to look at, animal shows and more than 150 trade stands, including an impressive food hall.

The event is from 10am to 5pm each day and tickets cost £10 for adults, £5 for children and £7 for senior citizens.
