A barber who dreamt of opening his own shop has thanked his loyal customers for voting it the best in south Essex for 2023.

James Timotheou opened Timotheou’s in Woodgrange Drive, Southend, in 2010. It has just been named the Echo’s Barbershop of the Year winner.

Over the last decade, the salon has built up a loyal following and a good reputation for “quality haircuts”.

Owner James said: “Barbering has always been my passion. At the age of 16, I started studying hairdressing and I’ve been cutting hair ever since. It was always my dream to open my own barber shop, so I took the plunge and never looked back.

“Every year, we continue to grow the business, but we wouldn’t be where we are today without the support of our loyal customers. Receiving an award such as this means a lot to me.”

“I’d also like to thank our team in the shop for their continued hard work and commitment.

He singled out Warren Coutts, 28, of Zider Pass, Canvey, for praise, adding: “A special thank you to Warren, who has been with me for 12 years and is a valuable asset to the business.”

Warren described the news as “brilliant”.

He said: “The response from our clients is overwhelming. We just give the best service we can.

“Some of our clients have been with us since we opened  sitting on wooden boxes before we even got our chairs.

“It’s hard to put into words how much their support means.

“I’d like to say a big ‘thank you’ to our loyal customers.”

Located close to the train station, the salon is popular with commuters.

Warren added: “A lot of people come in for a quick trim after work, so we stay open a bit later on Thursdays and Fridays, until about 7pm.”

To celebrate the award, Timotheou’s is offering £10 haircuts to all new customers until the end of January.

Timotheou’s is open from Monday to Wednesday, 9am until 6pm. On Thursday and Friday, it is open until 7pm.

The shop is open on Saturdays from 9am until 5.30pm and is closed on Sundays.
