A councillor has warned shoppers a major supermarket's car park is closed alongside a nearby play area as crews tackle a blaze.

Firefighters are currently at the scene of a large fire which broke out at an industrial unit in Progress Road, Eastwood, at around 7am today (May 27).

A large warehouse - measuring approximately 20 metres by 10 metres - is on fire.

Ten crews are at the incident, as well as two Aerial Ladder Platforms, a Water Bowser and an Incident Command Unit, and have surrounded the fire.

They are working to extinguish it in sections.

As there is still lots of smoke coming from the scene, residents and those working nearby are urged to keep their windows and doors closed.

Progress Road is closed to all traffic and likely to remain closed for the rest of the day, according to Conservative councillor Kevin Buck.

Due to the blaze, Oakwood Park, popular with dog-walkers and families for its play area, is closed.

The Lidl car park closed, however residents report the shop remains open.

Councillor Paul Collins for Eastwood Park shared on Facebook: "Progress Road is closed. Oakwood Park is closed. Lidl car park closed. Please keep safe and away from the fire."

Police officers are also on the scene assisting fire service colleagues with closures in place in and around Progress Road.

Residents living near the industrial estate reported hearing loud bangs as the fire broke out.

Leigh Town Council Events also shared on social media: "There was an explosion at an industrial unit this morning around 7.15 am at Progress Road.

"Firefighters were on the scene within 10 minutes and are tackling it all but there is a huge black cloud of smoke billowing over much of Leigh.

"We suggest you keep windows closed and don’t venture out if vulnerable. Hoping no one was hurt who was at the scene."
