DOZENS of pooches got into the festive mood as a charity launched its first Christmas dog walk Santa Paws.

The Tom Bowdidge Youth Cancer Foundation welcomed scores of dressed-up dogs, and just under 80 of their well-behaved owners, to the special fundraiser held across the beautiful scenery of St Mary’s Lower School, London Road, Colchester, and nearby Bellhouse Woods.

The group managed to take advantage of the private land being opened to the public as a rare treat.

Nikki Bowdidge, chief executive officer and founder of the Tom Bowdidge Youth Cancer Foundation, said: “They all looked just fantastic.

“The dogs turned up in their antlers and festive bandanas while some of their mums and dads got in on the fun too.”

The charity was started as a legacy to Tom Bowdidge, from West Bergholt, who died, aged, 19, from a rare cancer.

Barney, Tom’s dog, made a special appearance on the day despite battling his own cancer diagnosis at the moment.

Nikki added: “We weren’t sure if Barney was going to be able to come so we waited right up until the last minute to make a decision.

“He loved being part of the action; in fact, he thought everyone had come to see him.

“We had a great day and we’re already planning next year’s event.”

While the total amount is still being counted, it is thought at least £1,000 has been raised by the foundation’s fundraisers for teenagers and young people with cancer.
