SOUTHEND skies have been given a glimpse of the past, as a Second World War bomber was forced to land at the town's airport this afternoon.
The UK's only airworthy Lancaster Bomber, operated by the RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight at Coningsby, was due to land in Biggin Hill, but due to windy weather at the airport, it was diverted to Southend.
The aircraft has only just returned to the skies after being grounded for nearly a year following an engine fire, then having a refit.
On August 24 and 25 it will be based at Southend Airport for three days along with a Spitfire and Hurricane for the Clacton seafront airshow.
