SO a rollercoaster season of highs and lows for Southend United draws to a close. Whatever the league results, the Blues can count themselves unreserved winners in one respect.

The spirit, good humour and indomitability shown by team and players alike throughout the 2006-07 season has been magnificent, as has the discipline. As an icon and ambassador of the town, the Blues reflect well on Southend.

The picture in today's Echo of young fans in fancy dress, as they gear up for Southampton and the last match of the season, says it all.

These exuberant supporters don't look like fans of a relegated team. Nobody needs to explain to them that the main point of football is to have a good time, whatever the final result.

The word that is constantly repeated by these and other fans is pride, and they have plenty to be proud about in terms of what the Blues have achieved on the pitch.

Players and managers in their turn should also be proud of the support and warmth that has emerged from the stands at Roots Hall. It never faltered for a moment.
