FAST-FOOD giant Subway is moving into Rayleigh High Street.
The popular sandwich chain is taking over a vacant shop opposite the town clock.
However, the plans haven’t been warmly received.
Carl Watson, president of the chamber of the town’s chamber of trade, said: “If that’s where it’s going, then it’s a real shame. It’s a prime location being turned into another catering facility.
“Of course competition is good for business, but it’s detrimental to the town to have another store from the service industry.
“I have concerns there’s very little retail choice coming into the town. We have a great night-time economy here that is going from strength to strength, but we need more for the day time.
“You just have to look in the High Street and see how many shops have closed in the past year.”
