Shoppers queue from 5.30am at The Range

Southend Standard: Shoppers queue from 5.30am at The Range Shoppers queue from 5.30am at The Range

CROWDS of people queued outside Southend’s newest superstore to get the first glimpse inside.

Leading leisure, home and garden store the Range opened at Southend Queensway for excited shoppers who had waited outside from 5.30am.

Deputy mayor councillor Christopher Walker cut the ribbon and declared the store open.

He said: “It’s a golden opportunity for Southend. It’s a good store with good stock. I’ve been in and had a look around myself and from the length of the queue people are willing to spend.

“Thank goodness we’re getting a bit of life into the middle of town again.”

The Range celebrated the event with Heart Radio, which entertained shoppers with an in-store broadcast.

Store manager Justin Ireland welcomed the crowds accompanied by store mascot Captain Range who handed out balloons to children.

Mr Ireland said: “What a day it’s going to be. The queue was unbelievable – people have been waiting outside since 5.30am.

There was an amazing turnout for the opening and everyone seems very keen. It took about ten minutes for everyone in the queue to get into the building.

“So many people have said they’re so glad it’s in the area and it’s just what Southend needs. I think the store is going to be really popular.”

The new store, which was a derelict B&Q warehouse before it was completely revamped, has created about 150 jobs in the area.

It offers more than 65,000 products across 16 departments, including clothing, arts and crafts, pet supplies, garden, gifts and toys, homewares, furniture and DIY.

Until Friday, December 13, all shoppers can get £10 off purchases if they spend £50, by picking up a special voucher, available in store.

I went in there on Friday, and it was packed but the staff were very friendly and helpful, the atmosphere was great and the store itself is just what Southend needs.
Yes the queues mid morning were about 40 minutes waiting time long, but let's face it you do go in a big store on its opening day at your own risk as of course it's going to be busy.
Well done to all and thank God it wasn't another Tesco.

How depressing..getting up at 5am to queue outside a low rent shop.
These people should get a life.
Wilkinson meets B&Q ,hardly tempting.
And its in the worst position in Southend..Victoria Roundabout then Satan's Passage...buy a computer and have a lie in.
Give Range 12 months then empty shell again..bad decision opening there.

Went there last night - great that its no longer an empty shell and it has created jobs, but there is so much junk in there, I don't think I'll be going back!
They really need to sort the carpark exit as well, as the usual route is closed so drivers are directed down a one way street, wonder who will be made responsible when one of them crashes in to an oncoming vehicle.

I just cannot understand why people's lives are so empty they feel they need to queue up to go shopping, especially at that time of the morning. It really is a sad state of affairs. For goodness sake, people, the shop will still be there tomorrow and the next day and the next....
Also, having Heart broadcasting their drivel would have been enough to put me off. I cannot stand Heart, the most boring, repetative station ever. The Range may have variety but Heart certainly does not.

Access is a major problem cars are are turning left into Short street direct from Vic station slip road despite turn right being printed on the road and clear signage on the traffic lights. The pedestrian lights are green at that time and it will not be long before there is an accident

People on this forum are so negative anytime something new happens in Southend and the surrounding areas.Anything opening and hopefully adding to the regeneration of the town can only be a good thing. It seems people just want to run the town in the ground and let it go down the pan.Support your town before it's too late..

Queue outside a discount 'shed' at 5.30am?

Me, I'm too busy sleeping.

Mind you, I have to get up at 6 and go to work

Unlike the average 'Range' customer it would seem.

The shop may well be good for this town and good luck to it but the comments are not about that. Most contributors to this comments section are merely expressing opinion regarding a section of society that really need to examine what is missing from their own lives if they feel the need to queue up at 5:30am (and at this time of year) outside a shop just to be one of the first through the door.

What exactly was it that some people felt they would miss out on if they did not get there so early???

It is bad enough having to get up at the crack of dawn (and before) for work, let alone to go shopping!!!

Beyond insane.

I see the same "sad" people writing their sad inane comments about a new store in Southend that is going to make an absolute fortune. Me & my wife have visited 3 times so far. never seen so many people in my life, most of them making a purchase!! They must have taken more in 1 day than B&Q made in a year!!!
there is nothing wrong with the merchandise they sell, very good value everyday items, displayed extremely well in nice bright surroundings!!
to all the people who said it would close down within a year, do they really want the old derelict building be empty for ever? Good luck to The Range,
long may they prosper, & that they ignore all these very sad people!!

It is not the store or what it sells that does me in, it is the fact that people queue outside from 5.30am!

Personally I hope the store goes from strength to strength, but I am still mystified as to why anybody would have to queue at that time in the morning, what the hell did they think they were going to miss if they got there later?
