SOUTHEND United’s Ryan Leonard is relishing a return to his hometown club Plymouth Argyle this weekend.

The right winger spent 11 years with the Pilgrims.

And he cannot wait to head back to Home Park on Saturday.

“I was born in Plymouth and was there a long time so it’s a game I’m really looking forward to,” said the 20-year-old.

“Last season I was injured when we went there, and having to miss the match was so disappointing.

“But thankfully I’m fully fit now the small hamstring problem I had has been sorted and I can’t wait to get there.

“However, I’m only going to enjoy it if we win.”

Leonard first signed for Plymouth when he was eight years old and rose rapidly through the club’s youth team ranks.

But he only ever made one substitute appearance for the first team and he remains frustrated at not having been given more chances in the senior side.

“It was really disappointing when I was released by Plymouth and I was never really given an opportunity,” said Leonard.

“I thought I deserved more chances but I don’t think I have a point to prove going back there.

“I’m with Southend now and I’ve worked really hard to try to make the most of things that have come my way.

“I still know a few of the players and a lot of the people there and I have a good relationship with them all so it will be good to see them all again.”

And the game will also enable Leonard to catch up with members of his family, who will be at the game.

“I don’t get to see them too often because Southend is a long way to go from Plymouth so that’s another reason why I’m looking forward to Saturday,” said Leonard.

“Lots of my family and friends will be there watching and hopefully I’ll be able to get on to the pitch and play.

“We’ve had a few good wins just recently and we want to go there and try to get another one.

“But Plymouth have a strong side too, so it will be a difficult task for us.”
