CONCORD striker Harry Elmes has been ruled out of playing indefinitely after suffering a suspected epileptic fit.

The 26-year-old spent Monday night in hospital and is now set to undergo tests when he sees a neurosurgeon on Friday.

It’s a big blow for the Beachboys on the eve of their Ryman Premier campaign, and they are now hoping to bring in a replacement for the popular marksman, who scored 18 goals last season.

“It’s just a case of seeing what the test results are at the moment,” said Concord manager Danny Cowley.

“There is no time frame, but Harry won’t be available for the start of the season.

“The only thing we know now is he won’t play again until we are all given the go-ahead by the doctors.

“If it is epilepsy then I believe it can be managed and he can still play for us and exercise.

“But for the time being Harry’s health is more important than football.

“He’s a big part of our club and a lovely guy, so we’ll just support him for as long as it takes.”

Elmes joined Concord along with his cousin James Elmes two seasons ago from Waltham Abbey.

He has established himself as an integral part of the team and formed a formidable strike partnership with Tony Stokes.

Local non-league fans, players and officials have been leaving him messages of support on Twitter.

Cowley admitted it was a blow to their pre-season preparations.

He said: “That is what it’s like with football, there are always hurdles – sometimes unexpected ones – that you have to overcome.

“The season starts on Saturday so we will look at bringing in a replacement, who will probably be a young striker to support what we have got here.”

Concord kick-off their campaign at home to newly-promoted Bognor Regis Town on Saturday.
