CAMERON Belford is backing Blues to bounce back from their 4-0 defeat at Peterborough United.

The Capital One Cup drubbing at London Road on Tuesday nught was Belford’s first start since returning to Roots Hall on loan.

But the 23-year-old is certain the side will soon start to improve.

“We need to come back strongly from the defeat at Peterborough and we got the lads in the dressing room to do that,” said Belford, who is with Southend from Bury.

““It was not a great result for us and the lads know we have been off it but we have a few days to prepare properly for the Accrington game on Saturday now.

“Although a cup run would’ve been nice the league is the bread and butter and that is what we are going to be concentrating on.”

Belford, who also ended last season on loan at Blues, went straight in to the starting line-up at London Road.

But he knew nothing about the move until the morning of the match. “I was surprised to be playing,” said Belford.

“I only got the call on Tuesday morning so I stopped training halfway through and went straight to the hotel to meet the lads.

“We’d had a few chats over the summer but it was felt that is was best to leave it until the start of the season because it was a situation that I knew the lads and the way the gaffer plays.

“That meant if something was going happen at the last minute then it wouldn’t be a problem and it hasn’t been.”

Belford is with Blues for an initial month long loan.

And he is not sure where his future lies as Bury manager Richie Barker, the brother of Southend captain Chris, has left to become boss of Crawley Town.

“You are always looking for some stability but there is a situation at Bury now where the manager has now left,” said Belford.

“I am contracted to Bury Football Club but the month gives me an opportunity to play and see what the new manager’s plans are back up there.”
