SOUTHEND United manager Paul Sturrock is not concerned by entering the new season with a depleted squad.

Blues, who visit Peterborough United in the Capital One Cup tonight, are currently without a senior goalkeeper and lack options in central midfield.

But that does not worry Sturrock.

“I think it would be far worse to go out and make a panic signing at this stage than waiting our time to get the right people in,” said the Southend boss.

“I would like to emphasise to our fans that it is not a sprint, it is a marathon and that it is important to build through the season. “

I know fans our worried that we don’t have the personal at this moment in time but I can reassure you that we are working hard to bring in the right people to benefit us during the season.

“Some of the people will want aren’t available at the moment, but they might be soon.

“And hopefully we can make another two signings before Saturday’s first league game against Accrington Stanley.”

Sturrock still has trialist midfielder John Spicer and winger Stephen Brogan training with the club.

However, he would not be drawn on the duo’s futures.

“We’re still weighing things up and it’s about making sure we get the right balance,” said Sturrock. “

They’re still training with us so there’s plenty to be thinking about.”

That also includes a tough looking League Cup tie against Peterborough this evening.

And the Scotsman is expecting a tricky evening for his side.

“We will go with what we’ve got for this game and it will be very difficult against a team in the Championship,” said Sturrock.

“The league is our bread and butter but it would be nice to have a cup run at the same time.
