SOUTHEND High School for Boys achieved their 14th national athletics title at the weekend, winning the junior boys section in Gateshead.

The success was the seventh time in 10 years that Southend High have won the trophy.

And they finished runners up in the inter boys section, behind Rayleigh’s FitzWimarc School.

Southend’s junior boys success means the school have now won 20 national titles since 2000 — 14 in athletics and six in cross-country.

That is alongside the five world schools appearances, the last of which was in Slovakia where the school’s team of six cross-country runners came fourth in the world.

The latest trophy was teacher Richard Casey’s eighth national athletics winning team since his first junior boys title in 2000.
