ROBIN Womack has boosted his chances of another international call-up with his best shot put performance for two years.

The wheelchair bound 39-year-old, who is based in Southend, launched the shot out to 10.67m at Stoke Mandeville.

And that took him past the B standard qualification mark for next year’s World Championships in New Zealand.

“It was great to get past the mark of 10.50m and it was a great weight off my shoulders,” said Womack.

“But I do still feel there is an awful lot to come from me.

“I have been getting out to more than 11 metres in training and if I get the right conditions to compete in then I’m certain I can do that when it matters too.”

Womack controversially missed out on being picked to take part in the 2008 Paralympics in Beijing having previously finished fifth in the 2006 World Championships.

Being snubbed for Beijing has increased Womack’s desire to succeed and he is now desperate to be back in the squad for the Worlds in Christchurch, which take part next February.

“It would be brilliant if I could get in for that,” said Womack.

“Getting the B standard means I’m up for selection but now the next aim is to reach the A standard which is 11.23m.

“I feel I’m capable of that and I’m fired up to go to New Zealand as it would also help my chances of reaching the London Paralympics in 2012.”

That remains the main long term goal for the keen Southend United supporter.

And he is already dreaming of competing in his own country.

“Taking part in that would just be a dream come true,” said Womack.

“I think it would be good if I went there too because I’m someone who can get the crowd going as well.”

To achieve that goal, Womack continues to train hard at the Excel Health and Performance Centre in Eastwood where his work is cleverly structured by Craig Maddocks.

“Craig has been brilliant for me,” said Womack.

“He has really helped me improve.”

Womack is next in action on July 3 in Nottingham before heading back to Stoke Mandeville the following weekend.
