SOUTHEND United manager Steve Tilson is backing England to beat Germany in the second round of the World Cup on Sunday.

England set up the eagerly anticipated encounter after beating Slovenia 1-0 in their final group game.

And Tilson is sure they can produce a repeat performance this weekend.

“I think we’ve got a good chance,” said the Blues boss.

“Germany looked good in their first game against Australia but without being disrespectful Australia aren’t the strongest of nations and Germany haven’t looked quite so strong since.

“They lost to Serbia and didn’t look that special against Ghana so I really do think we can beat them.”

Much will again depend on striker Wayne Rooney.

The forward has been below par in the tournament so far and has failed to hit the back of the net.

But Tilson feels it is only a matter of time before Rooney is back to his best.

“He’s a fantastic player and if he finds a bit of form — which I’m certain he can do — then we have an even greater chance.

“It’s a game everyone is looking forward to and can’t wait to see and it would be brilliant if we won.”

However, after finishing second in their group England now face a far tougher schedule if they progress in the competition.

And that does concern Tilson.

“If we beat Germany then it’s likely we would play Argentina in the quarter finals, then Spain and then Brazil,” confirmed the Southend chief.

“I think that may be asking a little bit too much for us and that’s why I think the USA scoring late like they did in the week to push us down in to second really was a huge blow.”
