THE coaching method which helped establish some of the world’s top tennis stars is now also making an impression in south east Essex.

The wonders of Oscar Wegner’s Modern Tennis helped Brazilian Gustavo Kuerten on his way to winning the French Open three times.

And the same fast track method of learning the game has now helped thrust the Westcliff-based Invicta Club into the limelight.

“Since the story in the Echo last year we’ve had fantastic feedback and plenty of success,” said head coach Andy Magrath.

“There are plenty of ways to learn how to play tennis but this is certainly the quickest and most logical.

“The results we’ve seen have been remarkable and we’re confident there are more to come.”

Invicta member Sarah Skinner reached the final of this year’s Leigh and Westcliff mixed doubles final in her first season of playing competitive tennis.

She said: “I have improved so quickly from being a near beginner. “I have had a handful of lessons from Andy but also watched the Modern Tennis DVDs which really helped.”

Andy’s own daughter Tia has already represented the County when only training once a week due to the nine year old’s other sporting commitments.

“We want to promote tennis as an easy game,” Andy added.

“Modern Tennis allows beginners to feel comfort through success early on and takes them step by step through each shot.”

Modern Tennis’ coaching techniques, which begin with players using their hands simplifies tennis for all ages. It also allows players to develop quickly and to naturally advance to a higher level at their own pace.

“We have run courses for more than 600 coaches UK wide and their testimonials have been humbling. They have had great success with their own players,” Andy explained.

“People nowadays want instant success and results which isn’t always possible but Modern Tennis comes close.”
