GREAT Wakering Rovers interim player-manager Steve Butterworth has strengthened his options by completing the signing of goalkeeper Bobby Mason.

The former Thurrock custodian, who is based in Rayleigh, has joined the Isthmian North club from Craig Edwards’ Cheshunt.

And Butterworth hopes the shot-stopper will be in top form when Wakering, who are 16th in the standings, make the trip to 12th-placed Tilbury tomorrow.

“We have brought Bobby in and he is available to make his debut tomorrow,” said Butterworth.

“His arrival is a really big boost for us and he was Cheshunt’s player of the year last season, but he lost his place in their team because of being injured for two months.

“They signed a new goalkeeper and didn’t want Bobby to leave, but he lives in Rayleigh and knows he will play here.

“I asked him whether he wanted to have competition at Cheshunt or come and play for us - around the corner from where he lives - in the last seven games of the season and see what happens if he finishes the campaign strongly.”

Tilbury have a formidable front three of Lewis Smith, George Sykes and Mitch Gilbey.

And Butterworth knows his new goalkeeper will need to be at his best at Chadfields.

“Their front three could probably get in any team in this division,” added Butterworth.
