CONTRACTORS are working extra hours to finish roadworks on the A127 as quickly as possible, National Grid bosses say.

It said staff will work extended hours when possible to complete gas works that have caused tailbacks in Victoria Avenue, Southend.

The mains replacement has closed Priory Crescent and seen jams back to Cuckoo Corner as one lane of the southbound carriageway is closed.

Southend Council asked the company to bring in more staff to speed up the work, scheduled to finish at the end of next month, and minimise disruption during the tourist season.

A National Grid spokesman said: “We planned our work in Southend with the council.

“We always strive to carry out our work as efficiently as possible and with minimal disruption to the community.

“We began our work in Victoria Avenue during the school summer holiday period when the roads are generally quieter to minimise disruption.

“Where possible we will work extended hours to complete this phase of work, which is scheduled for completion at the end of September, as promptly as possible.”
