SOUTHEND Council has trained its 41st recycling champion to boost the town's recycling rates.

The volunteers encourage their friends, family, neighbours and colleagues to recycle more.

Eight new champions were trained up during Recycle Week. They learn more about recycling and waste prevention through training sessions and information packs.

The network of champions was set up to help Southend reach its 60 per cent recycling target by 2015.

To help improve rates recycling centres are now accepting discarded wood and disused household batteries.

Residents can take these products to Southend’s Household Waste Recycling Centres in Stock Road and Leigh Marshes.
