A new performing arts school is to open in Basildon town centre this autumn.

Kayzar Youth Services has plans to transform an empty shop in Market Pavement into the new Rhythm and Funk Performing Arts Centre.

The company, which already runs weekly urban dance sessions at Woodlands School, Basildon, Bruce Grove, Wickford, St Bernard’s High School, Southend, and in Brentwood, will use the centre as a base for teaching and exams.

Nader Boulila, who has run the firm with his wife, Tracy, for ten years, explained the school would not just be for street dance.

He said: “It will have two sides to it. One will be very urban, but there will also be classes in more traditional ballet, tap, jazz, modern, singing and drama.

“It’s very exciting. We have already lined up eight teachers.

“It was a dream, but finally we have achieved the long-term ambition. Now we have a home and it will be open to everyone. It’s going to a huge thing for the community.”

Kayzar has planning permission, so it can start work on the shop immediately, with the aim of opening in September.

The centre will also include a cafe serving refreshments for parents visiting with youngsters and a youth club will be run there on Monday and Friday evenings.

Mr Boulila said he was not sure if the popularity of shows such as Britain’s Got Talent was behind a surge in the popularity of street dance.

He added: “I think they are successful in south Essex because street dance is something accessible to anyone and everyone.

“In the evening, kids often get up to mischief, but dancing takes them away from that and turns negative energy into positive.”

Kayzar will continue running classes outside the town.
