POLICE will be stop checking riders on mopeds, motorbikes and bicycles to try to crack down on an increasing number of thefts.

Officers and PCSOs will be checking riders’ details and the ownership of their vehicles following the rise of thefts across Southend.

Inspector Leigh Norris, of Southend police, said: “Firstly, it may lead to stolen vehicles being recovered. Also, it will send a clear message to those committing these thefts that police are stopping bikes in large numbers so they’re likely to get caught.

“Lastly, where bikes are found to be legitimate, we can provide the rider with specific and relevant crime prevention advice so they do not become a victim of this crime trend themselves.”

Owners are being urged to lock their bikes up, even if they are only leaving them for a matter of minutes.

Mr Norris said: “Our research shows that, especially when it comes to pedal cycles, many of the thefts are avoidable. “Cyclists continue to leave their bikes unlocked when they pop into a shop for a few minutes, even though they know it only takes seconds for an opportunist thief to ride off on it.”

Anyone with information on who is committing these crimes across Southend can contact their local police station, or call Crimestoppers in confidence on 0800 555111, where you may be eligible for a cash reward.
