A KEY route through Southend is to get a traffic-busting overhaul to boost safety and improve connectivity.

Motorists have been warned of roadworks which have started this week at the Bournemouth Park Road and Eastern Avenue junction.

The project includes:

  • A new right turn for vehicles from Bournemouth Park Road onto Eastern Avenu
  • The widening of the road on Bournemouth Park Road allowing the installation of a new traffic island
  • Two approach lanes to the junction on Bournemouth Park Road
  • Installation of new traffic signals and traffic signs, posts, and lamp columns
  • Resurfacing on both roads

Southend Council bosses secured the funding for the scheme after successful negotiations with Government ministers.

It is hoped the move will improve access to the east of Southend.

The works are due to finish in March, but this may depend on coronavirus restrictions, Southend Council has warned.

Independent councillor Ron Woodley, deputy leader of the council, described the roadworks as “essential.”

He said: “I’m pleased that the council has been able to secure funding to improve the Bournemouth Park Road and Eastern Avenue junction.

“Improving the junction is essential for improving the flow of traffic in the area and ensuring safety for both pedestrians and drivers.

“The new right-turn will improve access to the east of the town, something our residents have pushed for in consultations.

“We are making every effort to ensure minimal disruption to residents with access to frontages being maintained throughout the works, and closures being advertised in advance.”

A spokesman for Southend Council added: “Lane and road closures are necessary to protect both the workforce and members of the public.

“All closures will be clearly signposted in the surrounding area. The works started on Monday and are due to finish at the end of March 2021, although this may be subject to change.”
