MAJOR improvement works are underway to bring traffic lights to a junction in Southend.

Roadworks have begun this week at the Bournemouth Park Road and Eastern Avenue junction, it has been confirmed.

Council bosses secured the funding for the scheme after successful negotiations with Government ministers.

It is hoped the move will improve access to the town centre.

The project will see a new right turn for drivers travelling from Bournemouth Park Road onto Eastern Avenue.

A new traffic island will be installed.

The works are due to finish in March, but this may depend on coronavirus restrictions, Southend Council has warned.

Ron Woodley, deputy leader of the council, described the roadworks as "essential."

He said: "I’m pleased that the council has been able to secure funding to improve the Bournemouth Park Road and Eastern Avenue junction.

"Improving the junction is essential for improving the flow of traffic in the area and ensuring safety for both pedestrians and drivers.

“The new right turn will improve access to the east of the town, something our residents have pushed for in consultations.

“We are making every effort to ensure minimal disruption to residents with access to frontages being maintained throughout the works, and closures being advertised in advance.”

The works will also see two lanes now approaching the junction on Bournemouth Park Road.

Alongside the installation of traffic lights, both roads will be resurfaced.

A spokesman for Southend Council, added: "The scheme is being funded externally through the Department for Transport’s National Productivity Investment Fund.

"Lane and road closures are necessary to protect both the workforce and members of the public. All closures will be clearly signposted in the surrounding area.

"The works started on Monday and are due to finish at the end of March 2021, although this may be subject to change depending on weather and coronavirus restrictions."
