The report on the signs put up by residents to warn parents about the danger of slime and weed on Concord Beach, Canvey, Andrew Roby Smith was quoted as saying “all the weed was removed” on May 23/24 by jet washing.

I visited the beach many times over those two days to observe the work in progress.

The workmen could not get the drainage valve to open, so had to pump the water from the pool. As the water receded the bottom of the pool was swept clean with brooms.

I asked the workmen if they were going to remove the weed and slime from the outer retaining wall.

They said “no”.

I inspected the wall when the work was finished and the weed had not been touched. At no time did I see a jet washer being used; nor did the staff at the cafe which was open during this period.

When the work was finished, the men failed to replace the cover to the drainage valve and there is now a hole in the wall into which a child could trap its foot, It was reported to me by the cafe staff that a few days later a young child did slip on the slime and injured its head.

My concern for children’s safety was so great I reported the matter to a councillor. I hoped for a quick reaction from the council, but none was forthcoming, hence the warning signs to parents.

The dangers are still there and I find it incredulous that a council which claims to have the safety of children as a priority can remove the warning signs and do nothing about the dangers.

A child will be injured on the new pool. It is not if but when!
