As two correspondents pointed out, Southend Council seems hell-bent on laying speed humps in as many roads as it can (June 14).

Aware of the damage these do to cars, I always make an effort to avoid such roads. There are enough warning signs, after all.

Not so in the streets off Westborough Road. The area is now over-run with speed humps and barely a warning sign in sight.

Many of these side streets are fully or partially one way, so once you’re in, that’s it, you’ve got no choice but to crash and bang your way to the end and a big repair bill.

Luckily, I was in a friend’s 4x4 when I first encountered the humps, but others don’t appear so lucky.

I watched a car enter Fleetwood Avenue, spot a hump and then reverse the wrong way up a one way street, back onto the A13.

Signs would have prevented this dangerous move and Southend Council should be legally obliged to erect them.
