SAFETY measures are set to be installed at a bridge where a young man and teenage boy were struck by trains after accessing the railway line.

Luiz Anjos, 21, was found dead on the tracks at St Dominic’s bridge, in Colchester, in November last year.

Senior coroner Caroline Beasley-Murray said she was concerned at the ease with which Mr Anjos had accessed the railway line from the footbridge.

She concluded the Mr Anjos killed himself while suffering from a diagnosed mental illness.

In July last year, 14-year-old Kayden Cantlow died after he was struck by a train near the same bridge.

The teenager had been suffering with depression.

His brother has been pushing a safety campaign calling for improvements to the bridge.

In a report to prevent future deaths, penned by the coroner, Mrs Beasley-Murray said: “There is a risk that future deaths will occur unless action is taken.”

A response from Essex Highways, published by the Courts and Tribunals Judiciary last week, said a full structural assessment is due to be completed by the end of this month.

It reads: “Once the bridge has undergone a full engineering assessment, the design of any refurbishment works can commence.

“The design is estimated to take approximately twelve weeks to complete, should no additional strengthening works be necessary.

“If it is agreed to provide these works the chosen option must be agreed by Network Rail, as the footbridge travels over the train line and is extremely close to overhead cables.

“Once designed, the works are likely to last an estimated six weeks to complete.”

The authority’s preferred option for improvements involves installing high steel panels.

The report said: “Our initial investigations suggest that this option provides more durability to the structure, along with providing preventative measures to reduce the possibilities of further incidents occurring in the future at this location.”
