THE coronavirus infection rate in Basildon has risen again and is now more than twice the Essex average.

In its weekly update, County Hall has released figures showing the rate in Basildon stood at 290.6 cases per 100,000 people as of November 26.

That's up from 266.6 the week before and more than double the average in the Essex County Council area - which is 138.2.

The infection rate in the Rochford district remains steady and is now 132.7 - down slightly from 139.6 the week before.

But there has been an encouraging decrease in Castle Point, which has seen its rate lower from 209.1 to 178.1.

Essex County Council says there were 271 hospital beds occupied by Covid-19 patients in the county on December 1.

That equates to just 9.4 per cent capacity in Essex hospitals, but is slightly higher than the week before when 265 beds were occupied.

Southend gathers its data slightly differently than other Essex districts.

As of yesterday (Wednesday, December 2) the rate in the borough was 115.8.
