Students are self-isolating after a member of staff at Sweyne Park School tested positive for coronavirus.

The Rayleigh school has informed pupils and staff members who were in close contact with the member of staff they must self-isolate.

Self-isolating pupils have been told they can return to the school on December 8.

Parents and carers of students who have been identified as “close contacts” have been sent an email informing them of the situation.

In a letter to parents, headteacher Katherine Dines said the schools was following “direct guidance” provided by Public Health England.

She said: “We know that you may find this concerning but are continuing to monitor the situation and are working closely with Public Health England. This letter is to inform you of the current situation and provide advice on how to support your child. Please be reassured that for most people, coronavirus (Covid-19) will be a mild illness.”

“The school remains open and your child should continue to attend if they remain well.”
