AMBITIOUS new plans have been revealed to transform Basildon’s Eastgate shopping centre with striking landmark buildings, shops, restaurants and 2,800 homes.

Developers Sovereign Centros and Leslie Jones Architecture want to change the face of the Eastgate and surrounding area with shops, offices and businesses, town centre restaurants, cafes and leisure, all within green and public spaces.

The exciting new blueprint includes a new street linking Southernhay and the bus terminal through to East Square and the new cinema district.

Under the plans, Southernhay would also be transformed into a “safe place” for residents and children with new homes with their own front doors and private gardens.

There would also be a pedestrian-friendly route to the town centre, complete with “pocket parks” and retreat spaces and 3,000 new trees.

The public are now being asked to share their views on the huge plan to transform the Eastgate centre, which was originally built in phases in the 1980s.

Graeme Jones, spokesman for Sovereign Centros, said: “We encourage the local community and residents of Basildon to take part in our virtual consultation to share their views on our proposals for the reinvigoration of the Eastgate Centre.

“We are wholly committed to delivering a scheme that the community has helped to shape and look forward to hearing their views.

“This is the start of an extensive planning process and we will continue to work with Basildon Council to ensure that our vision meets their needs for the future of Basildon.”

Pitsea resident, Sharon Forsdyke, 42, said: “I will definitely be getting involved. I am glad to see not only are they building more homes but introducing more green areas which is so important - it can’t just all be buildings and concrete everywhere, so that’s great.

“Basildon is becoming more and more upmarket with everything that is being done and as I have said before, it’s going to be a great place to work and live, and to bring up a family.”

Residents are asked to share their views on the vision for the future.of Basildon.

They can take part in a virtual consultation, which is now live and will run until Friday August 14, on www.eastgateconsultation.co.uk.
