‘LAZY’ fly-tippers have been handed a hefty fine after dumping mounds of rubbish in the middle of an estate.

Large piles of dumped rubbish were strewn across the Felmores Estate in Basildon last week, and a £200 fixed penalty notice has now been dished out to the culprits.

Basildon Council has not named the culprits at this stage, despite a request for additional information from the Echo.

A trolley, washing machine, a chair and piles of cardboard boxes were dumped.

The latest crackdown comes after a team of five specialist officers were recruited in February, to help drive the fight against flytipping in the borough.

And bosses are now taking a stand against the problem, which has increasingly plagued spots across Basildon, including Victoria Park in Laindon, since the lift on lockdown.

Basildon Council leader Gavin Callaghan, said: “Last week our enforcement guys issued £200 fines to the people who decided to dump their rubbish all over the Felmores estate.

“Our enforcement guys are back. We are handing out fines and we are installing CCTV all over the estates.”

Councillor David Harrison, chairman of the Neighbourhoods and Public Spaces Committee, said: “There’s absolutely no excuse for anyone to just dump their rubbish in this way.

“We are taking this issue very seriously and want the borough to be a clean place.

“There a whole load of services you can make the most of, including the Pitsea recycling centre, rubbish collection services across the borough and more- all it takes is to put your rubbish out before 7.30am on your collection day and it will be taken for you.

“We have seen quite the rise in littering across Basildon since the lift on lockdown started, particularly in parks. We’re now starting to get on top of this and our enforcement officers are back out on a regular basis. so if you are doing this be warned you will be caught and fined.

“The problem still continues, but those responsible will be dealt with. Not only does it cost the environment, but it costs the tax payer to help clear it up.

"These people are just purely lazy, it’s not nice for anybody to look at.”
