HOMEOWNERS across Southend are raking in cash by renting out their empty driveways to seaside visitors.

Seaside resorts across the country has seen a huge surge in residents renting out their driveways to people – with Southend’s figure rising a whopping 375 per cent in the past month.

Southend’s figure is the biggest English coastal town rise, followed by Brighton at 340 per cent, according to data from website Your Parking Space.

The Southend residents who are renting their driveways are making on average £75 profit per month, with Brighton residents making £162 per month.

The figures have been rising as the UK is eased out of lockdown as the Covid-19 pandemic continues.

Harrison Woods, managing director at Your Parking Space, said people were finding new ways to earn additional income, and said demand is expected to rise further over August.

He said: “We’re seeing a massive increase in rented driveway bookings in seaside towns as Brits return to the coast following a relaxation in lockdown rules.

“Our research shows that Southend has enjoyed a massive 375 per cent increase in rented driveway bookings post-lockdown.

“I would expect demand here to only increase in August throughout the summer holidays, and at other seaside resorts, with many people preferring a staycation.

“It is a good opportunity for visitors to possibly save on parking charges, as driveways can be cheaper than traditional car parks while also providing more social distancing room for the vehicle’s occupants.”

Ian Gilbert, leader of Southend Council, said: “If people are less able to take holidays abroad it does look as if British seaside destinations are increasingly popular. As long as we can manage the numbers safely, it’s a positive thing.”
