A teenager arrested after a large scale disturbance which culminated in a car seemingly being driven towards a pedestrian has been bailed by police. 

The 17-year-old was arrested on Tuesday evening on suspicion of GBH with intent and possession of an offensive weapon.

He has been released on bail until July 15.

Police responded to reports of a brawl in Thorpe Bay Gardens, Southend on Tuesday at about 10pm. 

They found a man aged in his late teens with a knife injury to his head, which was deemed not to be serious.

A disperal order remains in place in the area until 6pm tomorrow evening, when it will be reviewed.

Southend District Commander, Chief Inspector Ian Hughes said: "[Tuesday] night's incident will have understandably caused concern for the local community.

"The behaviour of those involved is unacceptable and our Criminal Investigations Department is working to find those responsible.

"I want to reassure you that we are working alongside our partners, in particular Southend Borough Council, to address community concerns and issues of antisocial behaviour and deter activity like this from happening again.

"We will have additional officer patrols in the Thorpe Bay Gardens area and will continue to maintain a visible presence there.

"If anyone has any information about last night's incident, or has any concerns, please come and speak to us. We're here to listen and take action against those who cause problems in our community."
