A CARE home has been criticised by inspectors because no staff were on hand to break up a 15-minute spat where one resident threatened to hit another with a walking stick.

Rose Martha Court in Leigh Road, Leigh, has been rated inadequate by the Care Quality Commission, after the row on the second day of an inspection.

Inspectors saw both residents verbally provoking one another, when one raised their walking stick and threatened to hit the other person. The health watchdog said no staff were present during the 15-minute disagreement.

Bosses at the home say they have put in place a new management team and a “robust” improvement plan.

During the visit to the home, inspectors said not all residents had received their prescribed medication because there wasn’t always enough stock available. One relative also told the commission that their family member did not have their clothes regularly changed.

Inspectors observed nine separate incidents where staff performed unsafe moving and handling practices and two people with known choking risks were not supported in line with their care plan.

During the February inspection, residents’ comments about their safety included: “All the staff look after me, I do feel safe.”

One relative said: “At weekends staff are always phoning in sick, then you see on Facebook they’ve been out.” Another said: “I couldn’t praise them highly enough.”

In the report, published on June 10, the commission said the environment was not appropriate for people living with dementia.

However, residents were protected by prevention and control of infection.

A spokesman for the care home, said: “Our own internal quality monitoring had already identified concerns at the home, and we acted quickly to rectify these. A new management team was put in place and they have been working with the regulator to implement a robust action plan.

“Great improvements have been made since the inspection and we are confident that our measures will satisfy the CQC and lead to a far more positive outcome when the inspectors return.”
