An inspirational nurse who has been battling with covid-19 has been moved out of intensive care.

In a heartwarming video posted on social media, nurse Felix Khor was given a standing ovation and round of applause has he was wheeled out of the Intensive Care Unit at Southend Hospital.

Felix had been on a ventilator for five weeks as he fought against coronavirus.

He had been inside the ITU for more than six weeks.

The nurse, aged in his 60s, who lives in Shoebury, had retired from his role as the hospital resuscitation officer but returned to the hospital’s A&E unit and had helped in the frontline battle of the pandemic.

The Essex Coronavirus Action page have expressed their delight at the scenes, captured by Mia Dinnes from inside the hospital. A spokesman said: "Incredible scenes at Southend University Hospital today as nurse Felix left an intensive care unit after spending five weeks on a ventilator!

"An absolute hero."

A close friend of Felix, Linda Leaks, from Southchurch, revealed earlier this month Mr Khor had raised fears in mid-March over the personal protection equipment on offer to staff treating Covid-19 patients.

She said earlier this month: “He came to me on about March 17 and said he was concerned about the personal protection on offer to staff and felt it was inadequate.

“He then text me on about March 25 to say he was very worried about protection and keeping safe from the virus.

"He’s a very good nurse, one of the best.”

Wellwishers on the Essex Coronavirus Action Facebook page commented on how pleased they were at the new news.

One said: "Wonderful news!
