COLCHESTER'S independent traders have joined forces to host a Christmas market with a difference this festive season.

Members of the South Lanes Project, which covers streets running from the east end of Crouch Street to the west end of Eld Lane, have joined forces with traders in Trinity Street to host a supersized event on Sunday.

Dozens of retailers will be selling their wares, food and drink will be on offer including Christmas staples like mulled wine and there'll be music for shoppers to enjoy from up-and-coming artists.

For members of the South Lanes Project, getting involved in the event was the next natural step for the initiative.

Steve Hurdle, owner of Best Days Vintage, said: "For the past six months as a community of indie businesses, artists, authors and creatives, we have been working towards putting ourselves out there and trying to build a community along the South Lanes of Colchester.

"After getting to the final of the Great British High Street Competition, we are still waiting for the results of this, we wanted to keep this success going, plus continue to reach out to the shops, and public alike.

"This event, is the first of many that we can make happen. We wanted to link to the already successful Trinity traders market on the same day, to contribute to their already amazing bi-annual event.

"Why not expand on it, raise awareness, and make this into something special for the future."

This year's market will stretch along Eld Lane from Trinity Street and takes place on the same day as Colchester's Christmas lights switch-on.

Mr Hurdle added: "As a group we’re not willing to give up on our street, and believe that the South Lanes Project has potentially got the legs to become a destination point in the UK.

"The market will be a great chance for the business owners to spend time together outside with the great people of Colchester to tell them about what they offer, have some fun and start to get that Christmassy feeling going for everyone."

The market takes place between 11am and 3pm on Sunday.
