Watford slipped back to the foot of the Premier League with a home defeat against Burnley in a game where they were simply not effective enough in front of goal.

Furthermore, an injury to Craig Dawson before half time disrupted their defensive organisation upon which the visitors capitalised and scored three times.

Here's how we rated their individual performances.

Ben Foster - 6

Made some good saves once again and was unfortunate not to keep out Ashley Barnes' penalty, but at times looked unconvincing from set pieces and struggled with the opposition's aerial threath.

Kiko Femenia - 5

The full-back was called up late after an injury ruled out Daryl Janmaat, but he found it difficult to keep tabs on Dwight McNeil, while offering little going forward.

Craig Cathcart - 6

After a solid enough first half, Cathcart looked a bit unsure of his position in the second. Should have been tighter to Chris Wood to prevent the first goal and a big error from him would have resulted in a Jay Rodriguez goal were it not for the crossbar.

Craig Dawson - 6.5

Adapted well to the physical nature of the game and wasn't afraid to put his head where it might get hurt. Unfortunately for him, it did and he had to be substituted at the end of the first half.

Adrian Mariappa - 6

Filled in for the absent Christian Kabasele and didn't do a bad job. Covered well for the out of place Kiko Femenia at times, but was partly at fault for goal number three.

Jose Holebas - 5

Looked to have run out of steam in the second half and conceded a penalty with a lazy swing of the boot.

Additionally, his delivery from set pieces was once again nowhere near his best.

Abdoulaye Doucoure - 5.5

Although he did a lot of running, he did very little else, while his shooting and general attacking play was well below par.

Etienne Capoue - 6

Battled well in midfield at times and regularly spread the ball out to the wings. Went missing in the second half.

Will Hughes - 6.5

Hughes was arguably the best of the midfield three before he was substituted, although he did get caught up in the physicality of the occasion and was drawn into one or two silly fouls.

He played well in between Burnley's two banks of four and did cause a couple of problems in the first half.

Andre Gray - 4

Yet another game that Gray struggled to make himself a part of. He's simply not performing this season.

Gerard Deulofeu - 7

Very clearly Watford's best player, but was still not good enough.

Missed a clear chance in the first half and struggled to create much after that, although he was unlucky to strike the bar with a long range effort late on.

SUBS

Adam Masina - 5

Failed to live up to the bar set by Dawson before his departure and didn't cope well with the physical nature of the match.

Troy Deeney - 5

A largely uneventful return for the skipper, who was marked out of the game by Mee and Tarkowski. It will take a bit more time before he's back to his best.

Ismaila Sarr - 5.5

Made some good runs into the channels, but looked frustrated when no pass was forthcoming. Still not able to show why so much was invested in him.
